One of Clare Timmis's collages
Pip Cullingford's pen and wash characters |

“That’s a first!” said Eileen Bainbridge, as she was awarded the UH Arts Prize for “Beginnings” at the Hertfordshire Open 2011. The piece is Eileen’s impression of the primordial soup, inspired by electron microscope images of bacteria.
Three members of St Albans Art Society have work in this show at the City Museum, Hatfield Road until 4th January. Clare Timmis is showing two of her quirky collages of words and textiles, one on the wall and one on a free-standing cylinder. Pip Cullingford transcribed two weeks of his sketch journal onto a single spread of pen-and-wash characters. Of his selection, Pip said “They must have been desperate!”, but with an acceptance ratio of just 30%, all three did well to get in.
Congratulations Eileen, Clare and Pip

For the first time ever, we held Summer Sketching on a Saturday and a small group of members followed a trail of clues leading to four pieces of “public art”. Here are the artists at work and some of the results. The Courtyard Café formed a tasty base.
St Albans has many more public artworks, although some are well hidden. We are thinking about developing a trail leaflet for the city and linking it to the 2012 exhibition. What is your favourite piece? (send a sketch!)
Thankyou to Barbara for the whole Summer Sketching programme, members please join us in 2012!
