ELIZABETHAN JUBILEE

Here’s a piece of professional design work from Art Society member Julie Oakley, kindly lent from her own blog. The comparison of the two royal signatures is fun.

Julie writes: “Royalty-free images of Queen Elizabeth II were not an option when I was asked to produce the promotional material for the Elizabethan Jubilee concert (with music from the reigns of both Queen Elizabeths). However, I was lucky enough as a student to meet graphic designer Abram Games. So the Festival of Britain graphics produced by Games just before Elizabeth II became queen, served as an inspiration for my design.
To book tickets for this concert by the St Albans Chamber Choir on 4th February, visit the St Albans Chamber Choir website and follow the links.”

Eileen wins UHArts Prize

“That’s a first!” said Eileen Bainbridge, as she was awarded the UH Arts Prize for “Beginnings” at the Hertfordshire Open 2011. The piece is Eileen’s impression of the primordial soup, inspired by electron microscope images of bacteria.

Three members of St Albans Art Society have work in this show at the City Museum, Hatfield Road until 4th January. Clare Timmis is showing two of her quirky collages of words and textiles, one on the wall and one on a free-standing cylinder. Pip Cullingford transcribed two weeks of his sketch journal onto a single spread of pen-and-wash characters. Of his selection, Pip said “They must have been desperate!”, but with an acceptance ratio of just 30%, all three did well to get in.

Congratulations Eileen, Clare and Pip

Saturday
10th September 2011 An art trail around the St Peters area

Sketchers at Coourtyard cafe

For the first time ever, we held Summer Sketching on a Saturday and a small group of members followed a trail of clues leading to four pieces of “public art”. Here are the artists at work and some of the results. The Courtyard Café formed a tasty base.

St Albans has many more public artworks, although some are well hidden. We are thinking about developing a trail leaflet for the city and linking it to the 2012 exhibition. What is your favourite piece? (send a sketch!)

Thankyou to Barbara for the whole Summer Sketching programme, members please join us in 2012!
